Monastery of St. Archangel Michael
"Guardian of faith and Maleshevo defiance"
Just at the exit of Berovo, along the road leading to the lake, lies a place where silence speaks louder than words. Built in the early 19th century (1815–1818), the monastery "St. Archangel Michael" is not only a spiritual center but also a symbol of the defiance and sacrifice of the people of Berovo. With its impressive porch and architecture characteristic of that period, the church dominates the peaceful monastery courtyard, inviting you to enter a world where time has stood still.
The interior hides a unique treasure – frescoes painted in a style that deviates from strict Byzantine rules, giving the saints an exceptionally human appearance. But what truly brings this place to life are the legends. The story of Pop Petso and his daughter Sultana, who was to be sacrificed in a harem to obtain permission for construction, still lives within these walls. Today, the monastery is a living convent where the sisterhood patiently crafts beautiful icons in the Byzantine style. This is a place for spiritual peace, prayer, and admiration for the Maleshevian history.
